The Turing test: we flipped it without noticing

For decades, when people discussed artificial intelligence and how 'human' a machine could seem, the classic question was a single one: could a machine fool a person into believing it was human?

That question, framed in different forms since the mid-twentieth century, quietly assumed something: that the hard part, the part requiring effort and ingenuity, was getting a machine to pass for a person. Being human was taken for granted as the obvious starting point.

A starting point that no longer applies

That original idea imagined a blind conversation: someone asks questions without seeing who answers, and tries to guess whether a person or a machine is replying. The entire design of that test, whichever version you know, starts from a clear asymmetry: the machine is the one trying to pass as human. The person is simply... a person. They don't need to prove anything.

That asymmetry was, for a long time, reasonable. Producing a convincing, sustained, coherent text through a long conversation was something only a person (or an extraordinarily sophisticated system) could pull off. The bar was set on the machine's side.

The quiet reversal

At some point in recent years, without ceremony or announcement, the practical situation began to flip in certain everyday contexts. Not in the strict philosophical sense of the original question, but in a much more concrete, daily sense: on more and more platforms, forms, and corners of the internet, it's now the person who has to prove they are one.

Think about how many times a month you have to check boxes, solve visual puzzles, pick out images with traffic lights, or otherwise demonstrate, somehow, that you aren't an automated program. That exercise, so routine we barely notice it, is exactly the inverted test: it's no longer the machine trying to convince a person it's human. It's the person trying to convince a system that they are.

This didn't happen because someone designed it this way as a conscious, philosophical choice. It happened because the share of automated traffic, spam, and abuse grew so large that systems urgently needed a filter, as a practical matter. And that filter ended up placing the burden of proof exactly opposite to how we originally imagined it.

What's lost when the burden of proof switches sides

When the person is the one who has to prove their humanity, something subtle changes in the experience of being online. Every interaction gains an extra bit of friction: one more step, one more check, a moment where the system doubts you by default until you prove otherwise.

That friction, multiplied across hundreds of sites and thousands of interactions over the years, leaves an accumulated mark: we learn to assume doubt is the default state. It isn't a dramatic event, it's a slow erosion of the presumption of humanity we used to get for free.

An uncomfortable paradox

Here an interesting paradox appears. The better technology gets at generating convincing content, the more we need mechanisms to verify humanity. But the more verification mechanisms exist, the more, unintentionally, we train the systems trying to beat them. It's a race with no clear finish line.

There's no magic solution to this paradox. What we can do is acknowledge it honestly, instead of pretending it's already solved or that a slightly smarter checkbox is enough. And we can also value differently the spaces where verification doesn't depend only on a visual puzzle, but on something harder to fake: a sustained, real-time conversation with someone who is genuinely present.

We don't claim to resolve this paradox in one article. But understanding that the test flipped, almost without us discussing it as a society, helps explain why we increasingly value places where you can simply talk to someone live, without the constant feeling of having to prove something first.
